Reference guide

1st = first (1st – first)
2nd = second (2nd – second)
3rd = third (3rd – third)
4th = fourth (4th – fourth)
5th = fifth
6th = sixth
7th = seventh
*8th = eighth  (eight + th- drop the ‘t’ )
*9th = ninth  (nine + th – drop the ‘e’ )
10th = tenth
11th = eleventh
*12th = twelfth  (twelve -ve becomes f )
14th = fourteenth
15th = fifteenth
*20th = twentieth  (ty becomes ieth)
21st = twenty-first

10th March = “the tenth of March” or “March the tenth”

8th April or April 8th or 8/4/97
We say “the eighth of April”  but we don’t write the ‘of’ or ‘the’

Date of birth: 20/2/63 = “the twentieth of the second 63” – day/month/year

In American English their dates are month/day/year 7/11 is 11th July but in Britain it’s 7th November!

8th April, 2014 or 8/4/14 British in American 4/8/14

Elizabeth II = “Elizabeth the Second”.
